Getting Started - Step 2: Installation

Now that you've downloaded BackTrack, we need to install it, or else its not worth much.

As mentioned in the previous post, there are 2 ways of installation:

  1. Stand-alone
  2. Virtual Machine

Stand Alone Installation
First you will need to burn the iso file to a DVD or make a live USB installation.
If you wish to make a live USB, instructions can be found here.
If you are burning a DVD, make sure you burn the iso as an image not as data file.

Insert the USB/DVD into the machine and reboot your computer. Go into BIOS by pressing either F12, F8, F2, DEL, or whatever your motherboard BIOS button is, many times when the computer is starting. Once you are in BIOS, you need to set the first bootable device to be either the CD/DVD-rom if you are using a DVD or the USB if you are using a live-USB.
Save and Quit.

This time do not press anything whilst the computer is booting and you should see a message:
ISOLINUX 3.63 Debian-xxxx-xx-xx Copyright... boot:
Hit enter and you will see this menu:

Choose "BackTrack Text" by hitting enter and the system will load into a live-CD version.
Wait for it to load until you see the line:
root@bt:
Type "startx" to start the xorg server, which is responsible for loading and managing the gui of the system.
Wait for it to load and you will see the BackTrack desktop. On the desktop there will be an icon labeled:
"Install BackTrack":

You can play around the system and look at the different applications, places, etc. and when and if you are ready to install, double click the "Install BackTrack" icon.
Note: Since it's a live-cd version of the system, any changed you make will NOT be saved!

After clicking the icon, you will be prompted to select the language of the operating system. Select it and click forward.
Now you need to select your time zone. If the time isn't correct, it doesn't matter. Select your area and you can change the time later on after the installation is complete. Press forward.
The third window is asking for your keyboard layout. Select the corresponding layout for your keyboard, you can test it, and click forward.
You have reached the partitioning window. If you have another operating system installed and you wish to have BackTrack and the other OS working together, choose the "Install them side by side" option and press forward. If you wish to erase the other OS or you do not have a different OS installed, select "Erase and use the entire disk". I will not go into the manual partitioning option as I got confused with it myself :)
Press forward and wait for the installation to complete.

After the installation is complete, a window will pop-up:
Select Restart Now. If you are using a DVD, it will automatically eject. Take it out and store it somewhere safe. If you are using a USB, take it out and put it aside.

Now you will see the GRUB bootloader. GRUB is one of the bootloaders made for linux, and is used with ubuntu. Select the Ubuntu option (usually the very first choice) and BackTrack will start loading.

Log in with the default username: root, password: toor.
Type "startx" and welcome to BackTrack 5 R3.

2. Virtual Machine
The 2 most common Virtual Machine managers are VMWare and VirtualBox. With whichever you have, create a new virtual machine with at least 10 GB of space (I'd suggest about 30-40 GB so you won't feel so tight on memory).
Load the iso and follow the same steps as for the stand-alone installation.
