BackTrack 5 R3 is a compiled version of Ubuntu linux which is made for pentesting. This OS comes with many pre-installed tools for pentesting and hacking, such as SET (Social-Engineering Toolkit), aircrack-ng, metasploit, etc.
Let's start with getting BackTrack.
First go to: BackTrack Download and click on "Download".
Choose the "BackTrack 5 R3" release.
Now you have to choose the window manager, in other words, the graphic user interface of the OS. You can choose either KDE or Gnome and experiment with both of them. I will choose Gnome as I am used to working with it and like it better.
After you've done that, you need to select the architecture. I have tried BackTrack with 64bit and found it to be very buggy. So, I suggest you choose the 32bit version instead.
Depending on where you are planning to install BackTrack - either as a stand-alone OS or on a Virtual Machine, you should choose VMWare Image(for VMWare Virtual Machine manager) or ISO for other Virtual Machine managers such as VirtualBox or to install BackTrack as a stand-alone operating system.
Lastly, choose whether to have it downloaded via torrent or a direct download. If your internet isn't as fast and is known to drop randomly, I suggest choosing torrent as if your internet does drop, you won't have to restart the download (which is pretty heavy -> 3.1 GB).
This is it for the downloading part, next part will be the installation.
